Her early years were spent in Madison County, Virginia, where she lived with her maternal grandparents. At around the age of 12, she returned to South Norwalk, CT, to live with her mother and father, who later divorced. Subsequently, she and her mother moved in with a medical doctor and his opera star wife. Despite the familial changes, Helen's education remained a priority.
